Everton get this Premier League clash under way. Gray has the first touch.
Hello and welcome to the live commentary for the Premier League clash between Everton and Brighton and Hove Albion at Goodison Park.
After conceding a 95th-minute goal against Wolves to lose their first game after the World Cup, Everton bounced back with an impressive draw versus Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Losing three successive games before their tie on the road last time out, Everton are just two points above the relegation zone. They will move into the bottom three if they lose today and other results go against them in tomorrow’s Premier League fixtures.
As for Brighton, they have won three of their last five games but lost to league leaders Arsenal in their previous match. Roberto De Zerbi’s side won back-to-back matches against Chelsea and Wolves before losing to Aston Villa before the break. Brighton then returned to Premier League action with a triumph over Southampton before their most recent defeat. Currently in 10th place, Brighton will be just one point behind Liverpool with a win. However, they have never won away from home on a Tuesday in the Premier League (D2 L7).
EVERTON (4-3-3): Jordan Pickford; Nathan Patterson, Conor Coady, James Tarkowski, Vitaliy Mykolenko; Alex Iwobi, Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies; Dwight McNeil, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Demarai Gray.
EVERTON SUBS: Asmir Begovic, Yerry Mina, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Neal Maupay, Ben Godfrey, Seamus Coleman, Ruben Vinagre, Ellis Simms, Isaac Price.
BRIGHTON SUBS: Jason Steele, Tariq Lamptey, Alexis Mac Allister, Leandro Trossard, Adam Lallana, Julio Enciso, Billy Gilmour, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andrew Moran.
BRIGHTON (4-2-3-1): Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Lewis Dunk, Levi Colwill, Pervis Estupinan; Moises Caicedo, Pascal Gross; Solly March, Jeremy Sarmiento, Kaoru Mitoma; Evan Ferguson.
Everton were the better side for the first minutes, but couldn't handle the Brighton attack when they started getting into the groove of the game. Full-backs Mykolenko and Patterson have struggled, regularly getting beaten on the outside by March and Mitoma respectively. Gray and McNeil have shown promise, but have not performed on a consistent basis in the first 45 minutes. They have had spells where they have looked dangerous, but also extended periods where they have offered very little. As for Brighton, they have been the better side. Mitoma should have two goals to his name, with De Zerbi's side clearly bolstered by the return of Caicedo, who has been excellent.
That's all for today, goodbye.
Next up, Everton travel to Manchester United in the FA Cup, with Brighton going to Championship outfit Middlesbrough.
